Walk around the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills where boutique art galleries display mainly Australian contemporary art for viewing or purchase. Call in at pubs and cafes along the way. This walk is not as "Art" intense as you will find in the Paddington Walks, but for the modern Art lover the absorption of Surry Hills atmosphere will stimulate the mind and enliven the senses. Markets: On the first Saturday of each month is the Surry Hills market at Shannon Park on the corner of Foveaux and Crown St (great for Walk 1). Here, you can meander around stalls of preloved wares and clothes, accessories, plants, CDs, gourmet delights and other objects of interest.

    From Central Station exit at the corner of Devonshire and Chalmers Streets, walk up Devonshire to Crown St and around through Bourke and South Downing St and down Fitzroy and Foveaux to Central Station Eddie Avenue.

    From Central Station exit at Devonshire and Chalmers Streets walk Elizabeth St to Philip St, left into Dank, along Young, then Crown, then down Devonshire St Central Station where you started from.

Walk One: Central Station to Crown Street circuit

Overview: From Central Station exit at the corner of Devonshire and Chalmers Streets, walk up Devonshire to Crown St and around through Bourke and South Downing St and down Fitzroy and Foveaux to Central Station Eddie Avenue. Markets are held on the first Saturday of each month in Shannon Park corner Crown and Foveaux Sts.

Start at the Central Station rear exit at the cnr of Devonshire St and Chalmers St. Walk up Devonshire St and you will find the Spirit Level Gallery, then continue up to Orson & Blake Gallery.

Continue up Devonshire St to the Crown St intersection. Turn right and walk down Crown Street towards Cleveland St to the next gallery. As you wander down Crown St, absorb the variety of commercial enterprises from brick-a-brack, to sophisticated lighting to antique and modern ceramic tiles and relax in one of the many cafes along the way.

Cross the road and walk back along Crown St to the corner of Devonshire again. Turn right at the fabulous and friendly Rustic Cafe for the next gallery on Devonshire St.

Continue down Devonshire St and turn left into Bourke St, walk down and turn left into Davies St and left into Raper St. Here, you will find the Brett Whiteley Studio complete with current exhibition, an open portion of his workspace, various literature, and watch videos of his life in a relaxed atmosphere.

Return to Bourke St (exit and turn right out of the Brett Whiteley Gallery, right into Davies St). Walk along Bourke St and consider a coffee at the fabulous Cafe Niki (corner with Nobbs St) or il Baretto. One street past il Baretto on the left you will find a small antique shop.

Turn right from Bourke St into Phelps St and walk up to South Dowling St. Turn left to access the Antique Centre which has dealers' stalls for a wide variety of antique items and many objects of delight.

Walk up the rise and left into McEhlone Pl where residents contribute to the lush beauty of their dwellings and surroundings and you'll have a chance to pat a cat. Walk to the end of the street and turn right at "The Foundry" into Marshall St and walk a few metres to the end where the next gallery is in front of you in Fitzroy St, then head left back towards Crown St to visit the other galleries.

Continue down Fitzroy St passing bric-a-brac stores, cafes and across Bourke St. Fitzroy St now curves into Foveaux St. Pass Aero Furniture on the left and on the opposite side of the road you will find exquisite pieces of furniture. Once you reach Crown St turn left and wander down Crown St to Devonshire St on one side and return on the other side back to the corner of Crown and Foveaux St. Along the way you will pass restaurants including the MG Garage, Fuel Bistro and Clock Hotel, clothing boutiques, furniture galleries, interiors, ceramic tiles, which include the following:

On Crown St on the same side as the park and Clock Hotel, cross Foveaux St to visit the next Gallery, near Dophin Hotel

Continue down Crown St and turn left into Albion St and walk down to the next street (Riley St) and turn right to visit the next gallery not far from the intersection with Reservoir St

Walk back up Riley Street to return to Foveaux St. Turn right and walk down the hill passing designer seconds stores to the corner of Elizabeth St, where Central Station, Eddie Avenue entrance is ahead of you.

Walk Two: Central Station to Dank Street circuit

Overview: From Central Station exit at Devonshire and Chalmers Streets walk Elizabeth St to Philip St, left into Dank, along Young, then Crown, then down Devonshire St Central Station where you started from. This can be quite a long walk between galleries and cafes.

Start at the Central Station rear exit at the cnr of Devonshire St and Chalmers St. Walk up Elizabeth St passing various cafes and home renovation suppliers for the heritage terrace houses and modern inner city apartments. About fifty metres once you cross Cleveland Street you will find the following gallery on the right side of the road.

Continue down Elizabeth St until you reach Philip St (a bit of a stretch), then turn left and walk up Philip St to Young St, then turn right and then left into Dank St warehouse. In this space there are about 11 galleries mainly contemporary art and an award winning cafe! This space includes the following galleries:

Walk back towards Surry Hills along Young St until you reach Cleveland St. On the corner view furniture design.

Cross the road and walk up Cleveland St towards Crown St to visit the next gallery.

Continue up Cleveland St and turn left into Crown St. Visit one of the great cafes or view the chic window displays and visit the next gallery.

From here, continue up Crown St and turn right into Devonshire St at the great Rustic Cafe for the next gallery.

Continue down Devonshire St and turn left into Bourke St, walk down and turn left into Davies St and left into Raper St. Here, you will find the Brett Whiteley Studio complete with current exhibition, an open portion of his workspace, various literature, and watch videos of his life in a relaxed atmosphere.

From here you could continue with Walk One to the Sydney Antique Centre. To continue with this Walk Two, from Brett Whiteley Gallery turn right, then left into Davies St and walk up to Crown St. Once you reach Crown St turn right and wander up one on one side and return on the other side back to the corner of Crown and Devonshire Sts. Along the way you will pass restaurants including the MG Garage, Fuel Bistro and Clock Hotel, clothing boutiques, furniture galleries, interiors, ceramic tiles which include the following:

Back at the corner of Crown and Devonshire Sts, turn right into Devonshire St and walk down to the next gallery.

Continue down Devonshire St to the intersection with Elizabeth St at Central Station.
